Seasonal Report ... Summer 2006

This summer has been so different then the 2005 or 2004. In both of those years we had to fight with the mud, rain and the cold all through the spring and summer months. This year the sky seems eternally blue and the thermometer is stuck at 30c.

The early part of the summer grazing season was a delight for the sheep. The lambs and ewes enjoyed the lovely weather and the lack of flies and mosquitoes made life a lot easier for the Guard Dogs, especially Micky who has the duty of minding the flock while they graze our furthest pasture. As part of our rotational grazing plan we used this pasture first (usually it gets used in September). This 20 acre piece of land borders a campground and summer resort. I often wonder how the campers feel about the early morning baaing of the lambs and ewes as the try and find each other when they get up to graze at first light.

As the summer days shorten we will move the flock back towards the yard and come the end of August we will separate the lambs from the ewes and start to select replacement lambs for next year’s flock.
